What’s it like to live at Heart and Soul? Below we feature some of the Sanctuary’s longer term residents.

Danny Boy
Danny Boy was rescued from the streets of a nearby NM town, emaciated and terrified. He had clearly spent the first year of his life alone on the streets, through the freezing cold and blazing hot temperature swings common to the area. His first vet visit revealed that his intestinal tract was “ropey,” due to starvation. He began an intense vitamin and nutrition regime and spent many of his first days burrowed in blankets. Today, he is our fastest runner and the light of everyone’s life (including the other dogs!).

Ivan
Ivan caught one of his his legs in a leg-hold trap, set on public land no less, and had to have it amputated. As the resident tripod, Ivan, now age 12, is used to keeping up with the 4-leggeds. He has the softest fur of any of the dogs, loves belly-rubs and being called Baby Ivan. If you stop petting him, he will gently grab your hand and ask for more. On April 1, 2022, Roxy’s Law went into effect in NM. Named for a dog just like Ivan who was sadly killed by a trap, the law bans the use of traps, snares, and poisons on public lands.

Everest
Twenty years ago, Everest and three other horses were found emaciated, starving on native land in Sandoval county southwest of Santa Fe and claimed by no one. All four were on the brink of death when the Sanctuary stepped in to help. Sadly, two of the horses didn’t make it, but Everest (and our Pinto horse named Tony) were able to regain strength, nearly doubling their weights to now a healthy (hefty) 1800 lbs. Everest is one of our most social horses, so don’t be surprised if he greets you with head-hugs and kisses!
